據2005年末官方統計,東莞市有外來暫住人口584.98萬人,戶籍人口165.65萬人，總人口為750、63萬人。事實上，對於暫住人口的統計一直以辦理暫住證的人數作為資料，真實的資料遠大於584、98萬人。據專家估算，東莞的實際總人口在1000萬--1100萬人之間。

 

龐大的外來人口帶來東莞經濟的繁榮昌盛，作為第三產業的酒店服務業也蒸蒸日上。據業內人士透露，除大城區之外，東莞的“紅燈區”最集中的地方是厚街、常平、黃江、虎門、長安、樟木頭等鎮。光常平鎮就有酒店80多家,其中星級酒店22家。另據旅遊局的最新數字,到2004年底,東莞市四五星級酒店達50家,超過深圳廣州;星級酒店超過100家,數量將排到北京、深圳之後,位居全國第三。據估計，在東莞從事“特殊服務行業”（包括ktv、沐足、桑拿、按摩、部分以美容美髮為掩護的服務業）的女性青年在10萬左右，而且運作模式成熟，呈現規模化、普遍化的特點，這與城市外來人口多、企業主及富豪階層多的特點是吻合的。

 

常平是香港人常來悠閒的地方，因為這邊有火車站和一個隱閑山莊，交通便利，一到週末就有很多香港人過來玩，以至酒店業非常發達。[黃江是因為有一家XX酒店，它的夜總會叫演藝館，現在有的酒店叫娛樂部，歌劇院，俱樂部，星際皇宮以掩人耳目。據一位從事酒店行業的網友披露，XX酒店在最鼎盛時期有著800—1000個從事性服務工作的人。還有桑拿部的技師300-500人，它的夜總會在珠三角是非常有名的也是最大最豪華的一家，生意很火，這個酒店在最鼎盛時期，從事這行業的人高達1500人左右。]:消息未得到確切證實,本人認為文章內容有誇大的成分,請讀者不要誤信為真,否則後果自負.

 

據媒體報導，在樟木頭置業的香港人士多達10萬人，因此樟木頭也有“小香港”之稱。樟木頭的酒店業非常發達，比較出名的有三正半山酒店、東莞新都會酒店等。幾年前,樟木頭鎮的逸東酒店和金色時光曾發生夜總會大跳“脫衣舞”、被中央電視臺曝光的事.然而,樟木頭的經濟似乎也不怎麼樣，房地產迅猛發展，製造業卻步履維艱。結果，城市裝扮得很漂亮，居民的收入水準卻得不到提高。這是被媒體誇大的經濟實體。另外，樟木頭鎮似乎也沒有經歷過工業的原始積累，直接向建築行業大肆發展，房子越建越多，住房子的人也不見得成直線增長。但是，令人疑惑的是，這邊的酒店行業卻發展得很快，大有井噴增長之勢。於是，旁人就會問，樟木頭的酒店靠什麼維持生意額呢?在我看來，樟木頭鎮的經濟實體是虛假的，地產也會隨之而泡沫、崩潰。

 

至於厚街、虎門、長安，這三個鎮是東莞的超強鎮，是東莞經濟的血脈之軀。虎門不但商業發達，酒店服務行業同樣不遜色。幾年前，香港議員到虎門嫖娼的事例足以證明此鎮性服務行業的繁榮昌盛,同樣也可以說明此鎮的"服務性行業'影響範圍廣。長安外來人口超過50萬，此處是東莞的製造業中心，很多外企老闆和香港老闆居住于此。厚街傢俱業發達，是有名的酒店之都，順著傢俱大道一排排的星級酒店令很多中外遊客駐足觀望。這三鎮的酒店業都有共同的特點，從事性服務工作者都是比較高級的，因為這邊國際友人、港澳臺人士多。

 

說到東莞的其它鎮區，石碣不得不談。在石碣超市購物，你可能發現，這邊是親一色的打工妹，基本或者很少男士光顧商場。走在大街上，你同樣有此感受。石碣是典型的“陰盛陽衰”。這邊，從事性服務工作者很多都是靠租房維持生計。比較漂亮的女士就會到酒店服務台商或港商。因為石碣從事性服務工作的人數比較多，價格也相對便宜。在石龍，這些“夜鶯”常常徘徊在中山公園一帶，石龍公安分局幾度嚴打，剿滅幾天之後，她們又會捲土重來，治理往往收不到預期效果。據知情人士透露，這些人員通常以老年人為服務目標，目的是收取比較多的費用。在茶山某村，這些“夜鶯”流連於公園旁邊，等待過往的老頭子過來談價，如果價格合適，她就會到老頭子家完成服務。東城某村，在髮廊工作的性服務工作者通常有統一的服裝，衣著酷似“護士”，樣子看起來清純迷人。同樣，在離莞城區非常近的東城某村，有一條路佈滿了髮廊，她們大多夜晚工作、日頭休息。

 

東莞紅燈區的大量存在是默認的事實。只有經濟高度發達的地區，此類行業才得以昌盛發達，香港如此，上海、廣州、深圳也如此。此類行業的存在，一部分解決了某些人的需要，一部分也減少了犯罪案件的發生。存在即合理。從事這一行的女士經常這樣說道：“我們不偷不搶，還給社會提供了某種服務。事實上，我們是為了生活才做出不得已的選擇，難道我們想嗎？你知道其中的艱辛嗎？我們提供的是服務，當然要收錢，這難道也是我們的錯？”但事實是這樣嗎?
